Amsterdam will retain ownership of AEB

The City of Amsterdam has decided that it will not sell its waste to energy plant operator AEB (Afval Energie Bedrijf) after failing to secure an acceptable bid in the sales process it started last year. "For the next ten years, the waste management company will remain under municipal ownership, and we will work together towards a strong future", the city announced last week. AEB operates a waste to energy (wte) plant and a biomass power plant. With a treatment capacity of around 1.4 million tonnes of non-hazardous waste per year, its wte plant is the largest in the Netherlands. 

After an unsuccessful attempt to enter into a cooperation with the Dutch waste management company HVC and a subsequent failed sale of AEB to comptetitor AVR, Amsterdam's municipal government launched its most recent attempt to find a buyer for wte plant operator AEB in early 2024....
