Working on behalf of chemicals group BASF, researchers at ETH Zurich have investigated the gasification of plastic waste from end-of-life vehicles alongside biomass. According to BASF, the university's team found that this method could significantly reduce emissions compared to incineration for energy recovery.

According to the study, the co-gasification of one kilogramme of automotive shredder residue (ASR) with three kilogrammes of biogenic material can generate savings of more than three kilogrammes of CO2 equivalents compared to emissions from the incineration of these wastes for energy recovery....
