Belgium increased domestic plastic recycling by 8 per cent in 2025 and by more than 450 per cent since 2021, even as growth in recycled plastics production across Europe has "almost come to a complete standstill", according to packaging waste producer responsibility organisation Fost Plus.
Belgium recycled 74,200 tonnes of household plastic packaging domestically in 2025, more than five times the volume recorded in 2021, as recently commissioned recycling facilities ramped up operations even as the European plastics recycling sector faces a prolonged downturn.
