British waste company Biffa has acquired L&S Waste Management. The purchase of the construction and demolition (C&D) waste operator based in Hampshire was completed early last week. The value of the transaction was not disclosed.

According to Biffa, L&S operates two C&D material recycling facilities in Southampton and Portsmouth with a combined annual capacity of 225,000 tonnes and a transfer station in Fareham, as well as a fleet of 91 collection vehicles. The company serves major urban areas along England's South Coast, including Southampton, Portsmouth, Fareham and Chichester. Its new owner Biffa operates C&D processing facilities in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Birmingham and Cardiff. Biffa, the UK's second largest waste management company, noted that it was also the country's largest supplier of waste skips.

According to its most recent available annual filing of accounts for the year ended 31 March 2023, L&S Waste Management focuses primarily on the supply of waste management services, recycled and primary aggregates and ready-mixed concrete to the commercial and domestic sectors. In 2022/23, the company provided over 370,000 tonnes of primary and recycled aggregate. The company, formerly Lift & Shift Skip Hire, posted revenues of £33.2m (ca. €40m) and profit before tax of £2.2m (€2.6m) in that reporting year.

Biffa said that the L&S acquisition reinforced its strategy to grow low-carbon recycling solutions for its local authority and industrial customers across the UK. The deal would also increase the amount of recycled products available to the construction industry. L&S will continue to trade as L&S Waste Management, said Biffa.
