BIR: Plastic recycling market under pressure

Plastic recyclers are continuing to feel the negative effects of subdued demand caused by low primary plastic prices. Converters are increasingly using virgin material in manufacturing again, which is putting pressure on prices for regrind and recycled plastic and resulting in rising inventories for recyclers. Many companies faced the decision of whether to suspend operations, Henk Alssema, Chairman of the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) Plastics Committee, reported at the organisation’s spring convention, which was held in Amsterdam towards the end of May.

And other developments are a worry. "Please don’t touch our feedstocks,” Caroline van der Perre said in comments directed towards chemical recyclers.
