In 2024, the world’s leading building materials manufacturers intensified their efforts to decarbonise cement production. Central to achieving the industry’s goal of climate neutrality by 2050 is the increased use of alternative, waste-derived fuels and raw materials. An annual analysis by EUWID based on recent business and sustainability reports as well as other corporate publications shows that many major players have raised their thermal substitution rate (TSR) even further over the past year. In most instances, 2030 targets for TSR, i.e.  the proportion of fossil fuels replaced with alternative fuels, have been reaffirmed or, in some cases, raised.

Holcim, for instance, one of the world’s largest cement producers, increased its use of alternative fuels slightly in 2024. According to its annual report, the company-wide TSR rose from 30 per cent in the previous year to around 32 per cent. Holcim also reaffirmed its goal to meet half of its cement production energy demand using alternative fuels by 2030.
