Circular Economy Act: a chance to tackle EPR shortcomings

More than 40 European trade associations from the packaging sector have urged the European Commission to use the forthcoming Circular Economy Act (CEA) to address what they describe as persistent structural failings in packaging waste management systems across the EU.

In a joint statement published last week, the associations argued that existing legislation had failed to resolve "deep-rooted structural shortcomings that hinder the efficiency of the European packaging waste management systems". They call upon European policymakers to use the CEA to improve the functioning of extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes and to strengthen the European market for secondary raw materials. The statement's signatories represent a wide range of packaging sectors – paper, plastics, steel, aluminium, and glass – as well as consumer goods, furniture and retail businesses....
