Circular Economy Act: Electronics industry associations outline their priorities

Focus on recyclate quality, WEEE collection, and regulatory framework

European associations representing the electrical and electronic industries have issued a joint position paper last week outlining their key priorities for the EU’s planned "Circular Economy Act". The industry groups describe the bill as "a crucial and timely opportunity to accelerate Europe's transition to a clean, competitive, and resource-efficient economy". The paper's signatories, among them Applia, Digital Europe, Orgalim and WEEE Forum which represents take-back schemes, voice support for the Act’s overarching goals.

The industry organisations particularly welcome plans to promote the free movement of secondary raw materials and circular products, improve access to high-quality recyclate, lower feedstock costs for sustainable production, simplify rules on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), set clear end-of-waste (EoW) criteria and enable innovative circular business models. To unlock the full potential of the proposed reforms, however, they see a number of challenges which still need to be tackled.
