Danish municipalities warn that capping waste fees will lead to service cuts

New political agreements struck by Danish legislators are meant to control municipal waste management costs and increase transparency, but the Dutch Waste Management Association (Dansk Affaldsforening), warns that the new deals could result in service cuts despite lawmaker's good intentions. The association, which represents municipalities, joint municipal waste companies and waste receptions stations, cautioned that while a waste fee cap included under the agreement sound like a good solution, "the devil is in the detail".

Local Government Denmark (KL), another interest group representing Danish municipalities criticised provisions of the political agreements using even stronger language. Birgit S. Hansen, chairwoman of KL's Climate and Environment Committee said, "What was intended as a nice bouquet has ended up being nothing but thistles." She warned the measures would result in more bureaucracy and ultimately poorer service for the public and questioned whether services that were ultimately a municipal responsibility should be subject to such detailed regulation at the national level....
