Dow drops chemical recycling project with Mura Technology in Germany

US chemicals group Dow and UK-based Mura Technology will not proceed with the planned commercial-scale chemical recycling plant for waste plastics at Dow’s Böhlen site in eastern Germany. A Dow spokesperson confirmed the decision to EUWID. 

Plans for a facility using Mura's hydrothermal plastic recycling technolgy (Hydro-PRT) with a design capacity of 120,000 tonnes a year were first announced in autumn 2022. Commissioning was originally expected in 2025. But the final investment decision for the project previously said to involve a three-digit million euro sum was not taken in 2023 as initially planned.

The joint decision to abandon the project "reflects the broader industrial context in Europe, where persistent economic and regulatory challenges continue to impact the competitiveness of manufacturing investments, including those aimed at achieving sustainability goals", Dow told EUWID. Despite the setback in Böhlen, Dow intends to explore other opportunities for collaboration with Mura. ...
