Last year, more than 1,300 new biogas plants were connected to the grid in Germany, according to the industry association Fachverband Biogas. Overall, 7,215 biogas plants with a combined electrical capacity of 2904 MW were operating in the country at the end of 2012. Producing 18.4 bn kWh electricity last year, the plants’ accounted for more than 3 per cent of Germany’s total electricity consumption. The industry’s turnover was just under €7bn, setting a new record, according to Fachverband Biogas
