In 2021, EU member states exported a record volume of ferrous scrap, shipping 19.5 million tonnes to countries outside the European Union. Exports to third countries look likely to end up at a much lower level this year, though. According to preliminary figures from the European statistical agency Eurostat, the 27 EU member states exported just 8.6 million tonnes of ferrous scrap to non-member countries between January and June 2022, 23 per cent less than in the same period last year.
