The European Recycling Industries’ Confederation (EuRIC) continues to strongly oppose calls by the aluminium industry to impose tariffs on exports of aluminium scrap from the EU to third countries. "The messages coming from aluminium producers are deceiving and it is as such important to clarify that the claims made by European Aluminium do not represent the entire aluminium value chain," EuRIC stated last week.
Earlier, the European Aluminium association had once again advocated for "the introduction of export tariffs or export fees on aluminium scrap leaving the European Union to restore fair trade".
EuRIC argues that instead of restricting exports of aluminium scrap, actors along the whole value chain should look at other means for restoring the EU’s industry competitiveness. This includes tackling high energy prices and burdensome administrative procedures. "Only if free trade remains possible, can recyclers operate under predictable and favourable market conditions and their contribution to the decarbonisation of the European industry be fully harnessed", EuRIC said....
