EuRIC: Clean Industrial Deal offers "big decarbonisation promises, little support for circularity"

The European Recycling Industries' Confederation (EuRIC) welcomes the EU Commission's efforts to promote the energy transition and industry in the EU. However, the umbrella organisation maintains that the measures set out in the Clean Industrial Deal (CID) presented on Wednesday fall short. The EU initiative "fails to effectively link decarbonisation with circularity or recognise the key role EU recyclers play in cutting carbon emissions and generating resources", EuRIC said.

The association points out that the CID sets a circular material use target of 24 per cent to be achieved by 2030. This would be a substantial increase from current levels in just a few years, considering that the rate stood at 11.8 per cent in 2023. However, EuRIC believes that the Clean Industrial Deal lacks the concrete mechanisms to deliver the target: "How can Europe meet this goal when struggling recycling sectors, – plastics, textiles, and tyres – are left without support?"...
