Oil and gas company ExxonMobil is pausing two projects for the chemical recycling of plastic waste. The group had planned to invest around €100m at its sites in Antwerp and Rotterdam and build recycling capacity for a total of 80,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year. According to Reuters, Exxon cited draft rules from the European Commission on calculating recycled content shares as the reason for the decision.
The current draft under the EU's Single Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) would discriminate against recycling facilities integrated into existing petrochemical sites compared with stand-alone facilities.
Exxon Mobil had already voiced concerns in its contribution to the Commission's call for feedback on the draft implementing decision....
