Fost Plus achieves 90 per cent recycling rate for packaging waste in 2021

Roll-out of recycling capacity for new plastic packaging fractions by 2024

Fost Plus, the Belgian "green dot" system, recycled nearly 90 per cent of the 804,000 tonnes of household packaging that its 4,650 members placed on the market in 2021. According to last year's annual report, the extended producer responsibility (EPR) scheme sent the lion's share of the collected packaging waste (80 per cent) for recycling in Belgium. The remainder was recycled in the Netherlands (11 per cent), Germany (4 per cent), France (3 per cent) and Spain (2 per cent).

In the report for 2021, Fost Plus noted that Belgian packaging recycling had received "a significant boost" with last year's launch of the "new blue bag" used to collected a broader variety of light-weight packaging which is sent for sorting into up to 14 fractions: eleven plastic waste fractions, two metal fractions and beverage cartons....
