Norwegian waste and raw materials management company Geminor will transport 1.2 million tonnes of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) from southern Italy to waste-to-energy (wte) plants in Northern Europe, Germany, and the Netherlands, the company said. The waste is being managed under a contract between the Campania Region and a temporary joint venture between the Italian environmental service providers Enki and Vibeco which was awarded last summer via a public tender. Geminor is partnering with the Region's Italian contractors under a separate three-year deal and will transport the waste by ship to the energy from waste (EfW) facilities where it will be treated, the company said.
According to the contract award decree, the waste management contract secured by RTI Enki s.r.l. and Vibeco s.r.l. covers the "removal, transport and delivery to energy re-covery and/or material recovery plants ... of 1,200,000 tonnes of waste stored in bales at dedicated sites in the Campania Region, dating from the 2000/2009 emergency period".
"Given past concerns about waste management in the Campania region," the invitation to tender, together with the resulting contracts, ensures strict financial oversight, strong compliance measures, and full transparency and accountability," explained Geminor.
