German recovered paper arisings decline again in 2024

A total of 12.4 million t of recovered paper were collected in Germany last year, marking another year-on-year decrease in recovered paper arisings. Collection volumes were around 180,000 tonnes lower than in 2023, according to recent statistics from the association "Die Papierindustrie". This continues the established downward trend in collection volumes. Almost 3 million tonnes less recovered paper was collected in Germany last year than in 2015.

However, last year’s decrease in recovered paper arisings coincided with an increase in the German paper industry’s its output. According to the association, mills improved their average capacity utilisation by more than 4 percentage points last year to over 84 per cent. The total production of paper, paperboard and cartonboard increased by three per cent to 19.2 million t, while apparent consumption even rose by more than 4 per cent to just under 15.9 million t....
