The British waste management companies Biffa and FCC Environment have for the first time integrated data from AI-based analysis systems into their reporting to the Environment Agency. The technology supplied by Greyparrot provides continuous information on the composition of outbound material streams at sorting facilities.
Announcing the new deployment of its technology at the IFAT Munich 2026 trade fair last week, Greyparrot said the data is submitted as part of the expanded reporting requirements under Material Facilities (MF) regulations that came into force in 2024. The accompanying updated materials recovery facility (MRF) Code of Practice requires a greater number of waste sorting facilities to more frequently sample, analyse and report on incoming and outgoing material streams.
To meet these increased operational demands, FCC Environment and Biffa, both MRF operators, worked with Greyparrot to explore how AI‑supported sampling can be applied to selected outbound products as part of their compliance reporting....
