The German international shipping and container transport company is introducing stricter documentation requirements for shipments of waste plastic and metal scrap to a range of Southeast Asian destinations, citing heightened regulatory scrutiny and a growing number of customs interventions in the region.
Customs inspections had been stepped up after numerous instances of false or incomplete cargo declarations and failures to declare waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
Hapag-Lloyd's competitor MA CGM tightened its booking procedures for metal scrap shipments to Malaysia in the summer after national customs authorities announced that it had intercepted e-waste shipments declared as metal scrap.
