Finnish metals recycling company Kuusakoski plans to increase its ferrous scrap processing capacity by 25 per cent with a new 150,000 tonne per year steel recycling facility. The company announced on Wednesday that it would build the new facility in Kemi, Finland, on the Gulf of Bothnia.  According to Kuusakoski, the site's operations will cover the entire ferrous scrap processing chain from pre-treatment to crushing, cutting and separation by quality and/or fraction. Through the use of new technology, the plant is to have improved separation capabilities and be able to produce recycled raw materials with significantly higher purity levels than was previously possible.

The project is part of Kuusakoski's green investment programme launched last autumn. The new recycling facility will be built at the site of Stora Enso's shuttered Veitsiluoto paper mill and is expected to be operational in 2025. The site has access to port facilities and the recycler noted the linkage of sea freight, rail and road transport available at Kemi. Plans are in place to develop a circular economy hub at the site, which also houses textile fibre recycler Infinited Fiber in Stora Enso's former paper machinery hall.
