Worldwide crude steel production increased marginally last year, but the amount of scrap used in steel manufacturing was 12 per cent lower than in 2022, Rolf Willeke, statistics advisor of the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR), reported at the organisation’s spring convention, which took place in Copenhagen in late May.
At the event, he presented the 15th edition of the annual "World Steel Recycling in Figures" statistical report.
Crude steel production rose by 0.1 per cent compared with 2022 to reach 1.89 billion tonnes in 2023. Scrap usage reached about 411 million tonnes last year based on verified data for 82 per cent of global steelmaking.
