In three months, the EU's administrative procedures for transfrontier waste transports will be transitioned to a digital format. From 21 May, competent authorities and economic operators are to exchange documents and information via the European Commission’s new Digital Waste Shipments System (Diwass).
However, there have been delays in the technical preparations, and the provision of interfaces has been "relatively sluggish", according to Rolf Niehaus, head of sales for the Zedal International software suite, speaking at a webinar in late January. Around the same time, a group of eight European industry associations called for postponing the system's introduction.
Mr Niehaus, who is also a former board member at the software company Zedal, said that that switchover would bring substantial changes for system users, and preparations for the transition to the new digital procedures were taking up "an enormous amount of time" for economic operators....
