Mercedes-Benz and TSR launch "urban mining" pilot project for ELV

Mercedes-Benz and metals recycler TSR have announced a joint "urban mining" pilot project for end-of-life vehicles. An "innovative collection site" is to be opened this summer in the northwest of Germany. The aim is to reclaim high-quality secondary raw materials for use in new Mercedes-Benz vehicles through dismantling and recycling, according to the car group's press release. Mercedes-Benz had signed a memorandum of understanding last year to work towards a sustainable circular economy for ELV with TSR. The recycler is a subsidiary of Remondis, the largest waste management group in Germany.

During the joint pilot project, various purchased ELV of various brands are to be depolluted and valuable easily accessible components are to be removed. The materials will then be processed using an innovative recycling method developed by TSR. "Materials such as steel, aluminium, plastic, copper, and glass will be recovered, sorted by type and then reintegrated into the production cycle via selected material suppliers," Mercedes-Benz said....
