Mondi has officially started the conversion of its Duino mill in Italy to the production of recycled corrugated case material. The company broke ground on the investment project in an official ceremony on 23 May.

According to the CEO of Mondi Corrugated Packaging, Markus Gärtner, the project team is currently preparing for the upcoming construction works, with a new recycled fibre plant, wastewater treatment plant and the associated infrastructure and warehousing.

The Duino mill is located in northern Italy, not far from Trieste, and was acquired by Mondi in January 2023 from the Burgo group. The company will convert the site's paper machine, which used to produce fresh fibre based magazine paper, to the production of recycled corrugated case material with an annual capacity of 420,000 tonnes per year. Start-up is planned for 2025.

The investment sum is put at €200m. It is part of the group's €1.2bn of approved investments in organic growth projects which aim at meeting the growing demand for packaging.
