Novelis plans to test the use of hydrogen as a fuel at its Latchford plant in the UK. The aluminium rolling and recycling company has received £4.6m (ca. €5.3m) in funding for the trial from the UK government's Industrial Fuel Switching Competition. By replacing natural gas with hydrogen as a fuel for the remelting furnace, the trial has the potential to reduce CO2eq emissions by up to 90 per cent compared to using the same amount of natural gas, depending on the final configuration, Novelis said. The demonstration, which will involve one of the recycling furnaces at the Latchford Locks Works, is scheduled to begin in 2024. The aluminium company is a partner in the regional hydrogen infrastructure programme Hynet.
