PET recycler Carbios and Novozymes deepen cooperation

French plastics recycler Carbios and Danish biotechnology company Novozymes have entered a strategic partnership. The alliance is intended to secure the long-term supply of the proprietary enzymes Carbios uses in its recycling technology, supplying both the company's first industrial-scale biological PET recycling plant, and future licensee plants, the French company said.

Carbios and Novozymes have been working closely together since 2019 to develop enzyme-based solutions for both PET recycling and the biodegradation of PLA bioplastic. Under the new agreement, the partners plan to expand their collaboration and develop, optimise and produce enzymes that will later be supplied by Novozymes to all licensees of Carbios's technology.

Construction on a first full-scale biological PET recycling plant is due to begin in Longlaville, France this year. With a design processing capacity of 50,000 tonnes of waste per year, the facility is to go online in 2025, Carbios and Novozymes said....
