Representatives of the plastics and plastics recycling industry have strongly criticised a planned increase of the EU levy on non-recycled plastic packaging waste. Commonly referred to as the "EU plastic tax", the national contributions form part of the EU’s "own resources" system and provide revenue for the EU budget. Under a proposal presented in July, the levy is set to rise by 25 per cent – from the current €0.80/kg to €1.00/kg. In a joint appeal to the European Commission, the industry associations Petcore, Plastics Europe and European Plastics Converters (EUPC) urged lawmakers to retain the levy at its current level and to earmark revenues to fund plastics circularity....
