The European umbrella association Plastics Europe has "significant concerns" about the outcome of the vote on the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) proposal in the EU Parliament's Environment Committee. "This is a missed opportunity to encourage the necessary investment and will undermine the development of the market for recycled plastic packaging in Europe," said Virginia Janssens, CEO of Plastics Europe.
The organisation conceded that the Committee's position represented an improvement to the original Commission proposal in some areas. However, the only aspect of the Committee report which it welcomed unreservedly was the involvement of stakeholders in the development of recyclability requirements.
In contrast, the industry association was "very concerned that the Committee vote "has weakened the ambition to create a market for recycled plastic material and does not sufficiently incentivise the use of bio-based plastics"...
