Global demand for plastics continues to strengthen, and more and more plastic is made from recycled content, according to a report published by the association representing European plastics manufacturers. In "Plastics the fast Facts 2023", the organisation Plastics Europe reports that 400.3 million tonnes of plastic were made around the globe in 2022, which was 2.5 per cent more than in 2021.
The proportion of circular plastic made out of bio-based and recycled raw materials reached a new record high in 2022, with a global total of 37.8 million tonnes. Roughly 35.5 million tonnes of this amount came from mechanical and chemical recycling.
The figures are based on preliminary data. Plastics Europe plans to publish finalised and more comprehensive data in the next issue of its biennial "Circular Economy for Plastics – A European Overview" due out in early 2024....
