PRE: the future of European plastic recycling is endangered

Europe's plastics recycling industry remains in the midst of a serious crisis. According to Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), the industry has been "heavily destabilised throughout 2023", and without intervention further recycling operations could be shut down. Prices for recycled materials have fallen by up to 50 per cent since the beginning of the year, while cheap imports from non-EU countries have increased significantly, the industry group.

Unless immediate action is taken to ease the pressure on recyclers, there is a risk that Europe will not meet either the existing recycling and recycled content targets, let alone the targets that have been proposed for the future, the association writes in a press release issued today.
