A growing backlog of plastic packaging waste is creating operational difficulties across Italy's waste management chain, drawing warnings from both collection operators and recycling companies. In separate appeals issued in recent days, public utility association Utilitalia and the Italian recovered paper association Unirima, called for immediate action to address what they describe as a growing crisis in Italy's plastic recycling chain.
According to Unirima, which also has a plastics section, the immediate problem is the delayed removal of baled plastic packaging waste from regional waste consolidation and transfer centres, some of which operate as hubs for the plastic packaging producer responsibility organisation Corepla. Stockpiles of plastic waste continue to grow and many of the facilities are facing increasingly operating difficulties, the association said....
