Prezero España and building materials group Cemex have expanded their partnership in the area of solid recovered fuel (SRF) use in cement production. The companies had now formalised plans, first agreed in 2023, to double the amount of alternative fuel supplied by Prezero to SRF to Cemex, environmental services company said last week.
In 2024, the Schwarz group subsidiary supplied around 39,000 tonnes of SRF to Cemex’s cement plants in Alcanar and Alicante. The use of alternative fuel has cut carbon dioxide emissions by more than 31,000 tonnes, according to the building materials company. With the expansion of the partnership, Cemex is continuing to pursue its decarbonisation strategy, which aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
Prezero is positioning itself as a preferred partner for companies seeking "Residuo 0" (zero waste) certification. To this end, it draws up waste management plans that prioritise material and/or energy recovery over landfill disposal. "The circular economy is part of Prezero’s DNA. That means converting waste into resources. We support businesses and public authorities in recovering at least 90 per cent of their waste so that it does not end up in landfill," said Pablo Caballero, head of the Industrial Business Unit at Prezero España.
The SRF supplied to Cemex is produced in part at Prezero’s new processing facility in Barcelona. Located in the Zona Franca industrial area of the Sants-Montjuïc district, the facility was commissioned at the end of June. Up to 190,000 tonnes of commercial and industrial waste are to be processed there each year, yielding 70,000 tonnes of SRF and 40,000 tonnes of recyclable materials. According to Prezero, this makes it the largest plant of its kind in Spain.
A new SRF processing facility has also recently been commissioned in Murcia, in south-eastern Spain, where Prezero operates a waste treatment centre on behalf of the city. Prezero reports that this facility is to supply the Cemex plant in Alicante with SRF.
