Renewi to transfer British operations to Biffa

The Dutch waste management and recycling group Renewi is proceeding with its plans to withdraw from the waste market in the UK. The British company Biffa will take over Renewi's five remaining long-term residual waste treatment contracts with local government customers in England and Scotland, the two companies announced on Thursday of last week.

The transaction is expected to close before the end of the year. In the short-term, the deal would adversely impact the Dutch group's finanical result.

The contracts make up Renewi's "UK Municipal" business unit, which is currently organised under the group's Specialties division. Moving forward, the Dutch company intends to focus on its operations in the Benelux region, which consist of commercial, industrial and municipal waste management activities, grouped in the "Commercial" division, as well as a number of material stream-specific businesses. These businesses include the waste glass processor Maltha, and the e-scrap recycler Coolrec which have both been part of the Specialties division for some time.  Renewi's contaminated soil, sludges and liquid waste treatment activities, which operated as the "Mineralz & Water" division until 1 May, now also belong to the Specialities division....
