The global award volume for the construction of new energy-from-waste (EfW) facilities in 2022 has fallen sharply. According to the latest survey carried out by the consulting firms AVP and Amane Advisors, which merged last year, just 56 contracts were awarded worldwide for the construction of new plants or for significant updates to existing plants in 2022. These projects will add around 39,600 tonnes per day of EfW capacity to the global total. The added waste incineration capacity was almost 60 per cent less than reported in 2021 and represented the lowest annual volume since 2014, the authors said. The Chinese plant market, which had been booming for years saw a particularly sharp dip, although it still accounted for nearly 60 per cent of the global award volume in 2022.

The Swiss consulting firm A. Vaccani & Partners (AVP) has published an annual report on the market for EfW capacity since 2002. The analysis process for the study updated in mid-May was the same as in the past: Vaccani compiled data about all new thermal waste treatment capacity over the past decade and specifically for the period from 2020 to 2022 based on reference lists and additional information from manufacturers. c at existing facilities were included in the calculations with a 50 per cent weighting. As in recent years, AVP rated the accuracy of the findings for 2022 as between 70 per cent for China and 95 per cent for Europe.
