The Schwarz group has set itself an ambitious circularity target for its in-house waste streams. By 2030, the group intends to reuse, recycle, compost or anaerobically digest 95 per cent of all waste generated by its operations. The German retail group, which includes the Lidl and Kaufland grocery chains, announced the new goal as part of its "Road to Zero Waste" initiative.
Schwarz said that its efforts were already delivering results. In the 2024 financial year, 89 per cent of the total waste generated by group companies, amounting to more than 3 million tonnes, was recovered. The 95 per cent target for 2030 was even more ambitious than earlier goals, since it excludes energy recovery as a treatment route, setting the company apart from its competitors, whose targets still include thermal processes towards their recovery targets.
