Shell retreats from chemical recycling goal

The energy group Shell had set itself an ambitious target of recycling 1 million tonnes of plastic waste each year using pyrolysis by 2025. In its sustainability report, which was published in March, the company stated that this target was unfeasible. It did not set a new goal. The decision was reported in a recent article in the British newspaper "The Guardian".

Shell listed a number of reasons for the step in its sustainability report. For one, global demand for circular chemicals was not living up to expectations, but there was also a lack of available feedstock for pyrolysis oil production, technology development was slow and regulatory issues were unclear....
