Shrinking market threatens plastics recycling sector

The amount of installed plastic recycling capacity in the EU increased again in 2022. However, the rate at which capacity was expanding had slowed significantly in annual comparison, reports PRE, the umbrella organisation of the European plastics recycling industry. In its most recent inventory of recycling facilities, PRE pointed to soaring energy prices in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine as a key reason for the slowdown. Plastic output from recycling operations had also risen less rapidly in 2022 than in the previous year.

"Progress is indispensable for ensuring the viability of the plastics recycling industry. While the commitment from recyclers remains strong, our sector has faced unprecedented challenges, first with the halt of activities during the Covid-19 outbreak, followed by the energy crisis in 2022," said Ton Emans, president of PRE (Plastics Recyclers Europe)....
