Last year, the amount of steel scrap generated in Germany reached almost 23m tonnes. This is an increase by 2 per cent compared with 2010, the recycling and waste management industry association bvse (Bundesverbandes Sekundärrohstoffe und Entsorgung) reports in its preliminary overview of scrap flows in Germany.
Crude steel production in Germany stood at 44.3m tonnes in 2011, with scrap accounting for 19.7 tonnes. The percentage share of scrap thus increased from just under 43 per cent in 2010 to 44.5 per cent. The foundry industry produced 4.1m tonnes last year and purchased around 3.8m tonnes of merchant scrap, according to the bvse.
