Stena Recycling opens plant for electric vehicle batteries in Halmstad

The Swedish company Stena Recycling officially opened a plant where it will recycle lithium-ion batteries (LIB) used in electric vehicles and other applications at its Nordic Recycling Center in Halmstad, Sweden, at the end of March. The plant will initially have an annual recycling capacity of up to 10,000 tonnes. However, the capacity could easily be doubled, according to Marcus Martinsson, who is in charge of the company’s battery recycling operations. He anticipates that, in a decade’s time, Stena Recycling will be able to handle five to ten times more batteries than it currently does.

The company aims to become a leading player in lithium-ion battery recycling in Europe. The automotive industry, already a key customer for the company, was enjoying a booming market for electric vehicles in Europe. Stena Recycling was ready to support the industry in making this transition, Kristofer Sundsgård, the President and CEO of Stena Recycling and its parent group Stena Metall, remarked at the inauguration ceremony. Stena Metall’s majority shareholder, Dan Sten Olsson, assisted by the State Secretary at the Swedish Ministry of the Environment, Daniel Westlén, and the chairman of the Halmstad City Council, Stefan Pålsson, started up the plant with the symbolic push of a button....
