Europe’s automotive industry could face considerable challenges in achieving the targets for the use of recycled plastics envisioned under the EU’s End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation (ELVR). This was one of the findings of a new study conducted by market research firm Conversio Market & Strategy on behalf of BKV GmbH, a plastics industry think-tank in Germany. As part of the study, the researchers analysed the availability of recycled plastic materials and produced a gap analysis with forecasts extending until 2042.
To estimate the future supply of recycled plastics, the study considers two potential scenarios. The business-as-usual scenario assumes moderate growth in total recycling capacity, while the progressive growth scenario assumes improved collection systems and faster development of new recycling technologies and capacity. In both scenarios, total production of PCR in Europe grows significantly. But despite this growth, the analysis reveals significant shortfalls in the future availability of high-quality recyclate....
