Work has begun in Northern France on a waste-fired heating plant being built as part of a partnership between environmental services group Suez and the French sugar producer Tereos. Located in Origny-Sainte-Benoite, the plant is to combust solid recovered fuel (SRF) and produce steam for use in Tereos's sugar refinery and distillery, according to the project partners.
The companies marked the beginning of construction with a ceremonial laying of the foundation stone last week. They project that the plant will allow Tereos to reduce its consumption of natural gas by 40 per cent at the site when the plant goes into operation in 2027.
Suez has supplied steam to another Tereos production site in Lillebonne near the Seine estuary since 2015. The steam is generated by the Ecostu’Air waste-to-energy plant which Suez has been operating on behalf of the regional waste association Sevede since 2004....
