Veolia to operate waste to energy plant in Istanbul

The French environmental group Veolia was awarded the contract to operate Turkey's first waste to energy plant. With a treatment capacity of 1.1m tonnes a year, the facility located in Istanbul is Europe’s largest, Veolia reported on Friday. The group says it will be responsible "for the entire operations and maintenance of the plant, ensuring stringent compliance with the European Union’s environmental standards, improving energy efficiency and reducing utility consumption". The value of the contract was not disclosed.

The waste incineration plant is equipped with an 85 MW turbine which will produce 560,000 MWh of electricity a year. This is equivalent to the consumption of 1.4 million inhabitants, according to Veolia. The plant was operated by İSTAÇ, Istanbul’s public waste and environmental management company (İstanbul Çevre Yönetimi San.ve Tic.A.Ş.)....
