Waste to energy: Full-scale CCU/CCS projects advance in Norway and the Netherlands

Hafslund Celsio, operator of the Klemetsrud waste to energy (wte) plant in Oslo, announced this week that it will proceed with a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project to be installed at its facility. The final investment decision was marked by an official signing ceremony, attended by the Norwegian Minister of Energy and Oslo's mayor, said the company.

The project had been paused in 2023 due to a sharp increase in the plant's estimated price tag. Since then, the company had been working to reduce costs and secure the future revenue of the system, said Jannicke Gerner Bjerkås, director CCS and carbon markets at Celsio in a post on LinkedIn. Ms Bjerkås has headed the project since 2018, when Celsio was still operating as Fortum Oslo Varme before the Finnish utility sold its 50 per cent stake in the district heating company.

The Dutch energy from waste plant operator Twence reached another milestone with its large-scale CCU project at the start of the year and the Swedish district heating company Stockholm Exergi locked in additional funding for the BECCS system it plans to build at its Värtan biomass combined heat and power plant....
