Waste incineration generates significant quantities of hazardous and non-hazardous residues, and these residues receive more favourable treatment in the calculation of EU waste targets than do secondary wastes from some other treatment methods. In a study drawn up on behalf of Zero Waste Europe (ZWE), the British consulting firm Equanimator estimates that EU waste incineration plants generate more than 12 million tonnes of bottom ash (IBA) and roughly 2 million tonnes of air pollution control (APC) residues from municipal waste incineration each year. When the incineration of other waste streams are included, the volume of generated residues rises to 28.4 million and 31.8 million tonnes of residues. ...
