EU waste plastics exports to third countries fall to lowest level since 2003

Imports into the EU hit a historic high in 2022

The EU's 27 member states are exporting less waste plastic to countries outside the European Union every year. In 2022, shipments to third countries declined to the lowest level in 19 years. At the same time, EU imports from third countries are constantly rising and climbed to a new record last year, according to recent preliminary figures from Eurostat.

Last year’s downturn in waste plastic shipments to third countries was rather modest at 2 per cent, which brought the figure to 1.11 million tonnes after steep declines in previous years which resulted in a halving of export volumes between 2016 and 2021....
