June saw a marked trend reversal in the German PET recycling market, with flake and bale prices coming under pressure for the first time in months. Market conditions increasingly shifted in favour of buyers. While some recyclers in Germany still reported stable prices (rollover) for June, others had already been forced to accept reductions of between €10-20 per tonne for flakes. Some market players expect prices to fall considerably more sharply in July.
Demand was mixed in June. Recyclers reported satisfactory sales in packaging strapping and, in isolated cases, in the fibre market, but the situation remained tense in the film segment. Here, PET recyclates are in direct competition with significantly cheaper virgin material imports both from within Europe and from third countries. Furthermore, the peak season for beverage packaging is largely over, and many fillers still held inventory that had been produced ahead of time, further dampening demand.
