The PET recycling market remained firm in Germany in May. Demand for flakes continued to be robust, while problems in transport logistics continued to complicate trading. Market participants reported that available freight capacity was limited and expensive. Higher costs and delayed shipments therefore continued to put pressure on recyclers' and buyers' margins during May.
Prices for clear flakes produced from post-consumer beverage bottles increased again. According to market sources, increases over April levels exceeded €100/t in some cases, while hikes of €50-80/t were reported more frequently. Prices for clear flakes in May were said to range from just below €1,200/t to around €1,300/t including delivery.
Demand for coloured flakes was also reasonably strong. However, market views on the near-term outlook differ. While some participants expect demand to weaken in June, others anticipate another month of solid sales. At the same time, sources pointed out that the availability of coloured bottles from deposit-return systems (DRSs) is declining amid an ongoing shift towards transparent packaging.
