Continuing the downward trend established in previous years, Germany once again exported less recovered paper in 2024. According to data published by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), exports of recovered paper and board fell by 3 per cent versus the prior-year level to reach 1.59 million tonnes. This is the lowest level reported since Destatis began recording the data in 2006.
Meanwhile, Germany’s imports of recovered paper grew considerably last year, climbing 15 per cent to 4.97 million tonnes. On balance, the country thus remains a net importer of recovered paper with an import surplus of 3.38 million tonnes.
According to Destatis, Germany’s exports of recovered paper to Asia saw the most dramatic decreases in 2024. Deliveries to India and Thailand fell by 44,000 and 24,000 tonnes, respectively, representing a drop of 72 per cent in both cases. Vietnam’s imports of recovered paper from Germany also tumbled by more than 60 per cent or 34,000 tonnes....
