German waste plastics market continues to feel the strain

The economic situation facing Germany’s plastic recyclers remains tense. High operating costs, an oversupply of certain waste fractions and persistently slack demand are leading to losses in many places. The mood within the sector is gloomy as a result. Raising prices is almost impossible. Instead, there is tough competition for volumes and a struggle for liquidity, with no cause for optimism on the horizon. According to many market players, even a modest recovery is unlikely before autumn. Relocations, company sales or even closures are being talked about with increasing frequency.

Compounding matters for exporters, companies doing business with the Far East face fresh uncertainty: Malaysia tightened import standards and instituted a new procedure for imports of waste plastics.
